School of Comm Alumni "Real World" Event - Were You There?

Last night, in Studio A at Dempster Hall, the School of Communication and The Career Center hosted the Annual "Real World - Alumni Event" where over a dozen recent Alum's chatted about their lives after Dempster Hall.  The majority of SOC majors were represented amongst the group: Film, PR, TV, Radio, SPCM, and Broadcast/Print Journalism.

In case you weren't there, here's what you missed:

- Carolyn Gierer, Account Associate at Emanate PR advised students to keep up with your Hofstra Connections - ATTEND NETWORKING EVENTS - 'Cause that's how she got her job!

- The common theme was to Intern, Intern, Intern! More than one internship is key and if you intern closer to your senior year, you may get HIRED.  It happened to Brittany Forgione who is now the Publicity Coordinator at LIVE! with Regis and Kelly.

 - Use social media wisely! Your LinkedIn profile should be up to date and connect with Hofstra Alumni Groups!

- Andrea Klerides, Ad Sales at Cablevision, mentioned to keep an open mind when attending Career Fairs.  If you're "stuck" with wanting to Produce, and there's an Ad Sales position, think about it before saying no.  It could be your next big opportunity!

- If you want to be a reporter, bite the bullet and move out west, then maybe you can come back to NY to work, according to News 12 Reporter Matt Pieper.

- Be humble in your job/internship process and once AGAIN take advantage of attending the networking events that The Career Center and The School of Communication organize.

By the way, Alumni tend to recruit for interns, which of course happened last night.  So if you missed out, make sure you mark your calendars for future events!

Come to "How to Be a Great Magazine Intern," next Thursday, October 6th from 6-9pm at 245 East Library Wing! All majors are welcome!

Live from Studio A...It's the Communication Career Fair!

Last Friday, October 21st we welcomed approximately 30 employers from the all areas of the communication field. Fox News, NBC Universal, Disney ABC, and PR firm Burson Marstellar were just a few of the stellar companies that participated in the recruiting event. Promptly at 11am, Dempster Hall had a line of eager students waiting to meet with these employers.  All were dressed professionally and ready to go! This year we had about 120 students that attended, all which the employers mentioned were "quality" candidates. We hope that you enjoyed the event and if you missed out, stop by the Career Center to pick up a listing of the participating employers.  You can see what they recruited for and remember if you see another event like this in the future, make you sure attend! You never know, you may meet your future employer!
